Rich Piatchek - Andrew High School

Rich Piatchek
Andrew High School
Inducted 2017

Rich Piatchek retired in 2014 from the position of Athletic Director at Andrew High School where he had been for seventeen years of his thirty-nine years of secondary education experience.  Rich was the athletic director at Hillcrest High School prior to Andrew for three years.  Rich had taught physics, math, and computer science over the span of four high schools all with widely different socioeconomic backgrounds that has provided him with a much broader picture of the entire state of Illinois. In his teaching tenure he has coached baseball, football, basketball and track and was the recipient of the Illinois Baseball Coaches Association “Man of the Year” in 1991.

As an athletic director, Rich was very active and hosted over 450 invitationals and IHSA State series events.  He still serves the Illinois High School Association as a state final bench official in football (25 years) and baseball (37 years) and is the IHSA Happening coordinator in boys’ basketball (26 years).  Rich was awarded the Illinois High School Association’s Distinguished Service Award in the inaugural year in 2007.  In 2014 he was awarded the IADA Class 3A/4A Athletic Director of the year award.

He had been very active in leadership roles in his conference and at the state athletic director level.  In his conference he served as the secretary, president-elect and president and currently is responsible for all of the conference schedules and maintains the web page for the conference as well as the historian for the conference.

Larry Bernard, retired Athletic Director at Bolingbrook and IADA Hall of Fame Member, remembers Rich, and said “I witnessed the coaches and athletes at Andrew High School demonstrate the same professional, hard-working, sportsmanship and goal-orientated qualities as exhibited by Rich on a daily basis.  The Andrew High School athletic community consistently excelled as per the leadership and participation of this individual.”

At the state level, Rich was a division liaison, state conference chairman, president-elect, president, website coordinator and is currently the retired AD liaison for the Illinois Athletic Directors’ Association as well as annually organizing the state hospitality suite at the NIAAA national conference.  He has been on the faculty for the state’s Leadership Training Classes, presented at the state conference, and was initially involved in the reorganization and implementation of the IADA web site that the organization uses.

Rich’s extensive knowledge of high school athletics and his dedication to the IADA are a few of the many reasons that led Rich to this selection as a member of the Illinois Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame.
